Magazine names Bellingham a best place
June 28th, 2007 7:56 PM
AMY HARDER
THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Go ahead and add Bellingham to another national list of “best” places. This time, though, it’s not for being the best paddling town or adventure town, it’s for being a place no one has heard of.

National magazine Mother Earth News has named Bellingham among the “Eight Great Places You’ve Never Heard Of.” The story is due out July 24 in the magazine’s August/September issue.

Bellingham has, ironically, been included on numerous national lists prior to this one: Outside magazine ranked it as the best paddling town in August 2006, and CNN and Money magazine rated it one of the best places to retire in August 2003, to name a few of the accolades.

The assistant editor of Mother Earth News, Alison Rogers, said she was not aware Bellingham was included on previous lists.

“It’s a great place,” Rogers said. “So it gets to be in a ‘great place’ article.”

The list focuses on cities’ dedication to renewable energy, local farmers and other “green” efforts, Rogers said. There was no ranking to the list.

“The whole ‘you’ve never heard of’ part is kind of difficult,” Rogers said. “We didn’t want to choose Seattle since everyone’s heard of it. We wanted to delve into smaller communities and find a way to include everywhere.”

The Topeka, Kan.,-based magazine has a national circulation of about 350,000 and Washington state circulation of 9,500. It picked a range of cities for its list, including the 70,000- population college town of Bloomington, Ind., and Dixon, N.M., a town with a mere 1,500 residents.

Dave Wann, an author and filmmaker who wrote the article, said that although he has never been to Bellingham, he has heard great things about its citizen involvement, nonprofit organizations and popularity of hybrid vehicles.

“Depending on who the reader is, most people have heard of the larger metropolitan areas,” Wann said. “That’s not meant to be a slight on Bellingham. Probably most people have heard of it.”

Wann said he originally named the article “The Eight Great Places You May Have Never Heard Of,” but the editors at Mother Earth News chose to stick with the “never heard of” concept.

Huge News for RE/MAX Northwest
June 12th, 2007 10:34 AM
An announcement from RE/MAX International:

RE/MAX International Acquires Its Largest Brokerage
in Washington: Strengthening Ownership in the Northwest

(Denver, CO June 1, 2007) – RE/MAX International is pleased to announce the acquisition of RE/MAX Northwest, their largest franchise operation in the state of Washington. The Seattle area brokerage has 320 agents working in 6 offices, and plans to open a seventh office in August.

Co-Founder and Chairman Dave Liniger said, “This acquisition demonstrates the RE/MAX commitment to be number one in Washington and the Pacific Northwest. We plan to provide the support services RE/MAX is famous for, but for the agents business will continue as usual. There will be no name change and no change in personnel.”

Current owners, Jerry Martin, Russ Schustek and Gary Hackney, who purchased the brokerage in 2002, will remain in place and continue to manage the day to day affairs of the business. RE/MAX Northwest offices made just under $2 billion in sales last year, the second highest in the entire RE/MAX Pacific Northwest region.

RE/MAX Northwest agents also set a high standard with their strong commitment to premier community citizenship. They have raised the greatest amount of money for the Children’s Miracle Network of any RE/MAX brokerage in the region.

Ralph and Margie Ripley, who first opened the RE/MAX Northwest brokerage in 1992, and who have remained with the firm as sales associates, plan to stay with the company after the acquisition. Gary Hackney said, “We have worked hard to continue the great legacy begun by Ralph and Margie, and I’m sure that RE/MAX International will honor our tradition by providing the leadership that will lead to even greater success.”

Dave and Gail Liniger started RE/MAX in 1973, in Denver, CO. Thirty four years later, it has evolved into a global network represented by over 120,000 agents in more than 65 countries. Today, nearly all home listings nationwide can found at www.remax.com
